OGBOMOSO, Nigeria – A bride-to-be, Rebecca Oyedotun, collapsed and died just a day before her wedding in Ogbomoso, Oyo State.
The tragedy unfolded during her bridal shower, sending shockwaves through the community and leaving two families reeling.
Rebecca was due to marry Abiodun Oluwadamilare on Saturday, 19th August 2023. According to the groom’s sister, everything was set for the celebration.

“The groom’s parents had slaughtered their cow at Ogbomoso, and being an only child, Abiodun was excited, unaware that disaster was hiding around the corner,” she said.
Evangelist Oyedotun, father of the deceased and a member of the C&S Reformed Church, Isale-High School, noted that his daughter showed no signs of illness before the incident. She collapsed around 10:30 a.m. during her bridal shower.
“We quickly took her to LAUTECH Teaching Hospital in Ogbomoso. After some time, she was revived and appeared stable,” Evangelist Oyedotun said.
However, by dawn on Saturday, Rebecca’s condition turned for the worse, confining her to her hospital bed. Doctors recommended further tests at Bowen University Teaching Hospital.
“The groom fainted and anxiously cried, ‘let me take her away.’ We were in the hospital throughout that Saturday,” Evangelist Oyedotun added.
Despite medical efforts, Rebecca’s health deteriorated until she passed away on Sunday, August 20, 2023.
Her mother, Mrs. Ruth Oyedotun, was too grief-stricken to comment.
The heartbreaking incident has left the community in shock, pondering how a day that was supposed to be filled with joy and celebration turned into a terrible tragedy.
Rebecca Oyedotun’s untimely death raises questions about undiagnosed medical conditions that can tragically manifest without warning.
It serves as a sobering reminder of the unpredictability of life, even in moments that are supposed to be among the happiest.
The families have yet to announce memorial plans for Rebecca.
