ORON, Nigeria – Eyo Edet, a prominent member of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, in Akwa Ibom State, was kidnapped by suspected gunmen on Monday, June 12, 2023, according to the state’s police spokesperson, Odiko Macdon.
Edet, who served as Deputy Coordinator of the PDP’s Divine Campaign Organisation in Oron during the last election, was abducted from his filling station, Eyotech Nigeria Limited, in the Oron Local Government Area.
Witnesses report that the kidnappers forcibly took Edet into a Sienna car, drove him to a waiting speedboat, and then set the vehicle ablaze.
The Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom, CP Olatoye Durosinmi, immediately visited the scene and initiated an investigation into the kidnapping.
“We received the information [about the kidnapping], the Commissioner of Police visited the scene of the incident and went to the waterfront where the Sienna used in the act has been recovered,” Macdon stated.
“Investigations have already commenced, and I’m sure the perpetrators will be brought to book in no distant time.”
The incident marks an escalation in tension in the region, and adds to the growing concerns over the safety and security of political figures in Nigeria.
