Pat Utomi Announces Plans for New Mega Political Party in Nigeria

Must read

LAGOS, Nigeria – In a bold move aimed at reshaping Nigeria’s political landscape, former presidential adviser and respected political economist, Pat Utomi, has unveiled his strategy to form a “mega” political party.

This initiative, according to Prof. Utomi, is set to challenge the status quo and provide a new path for the nation’s governance ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) after his recent return from the United States, Utomi expressed his determination to address the failures he perceives in the current political system.

He criticised both the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, and various opposition parties for not delivering meaningful progress or adding value to nation-building.

“The political party system in Nigeria has failed completely. Political parties are not democratic and they are not serving the purpose,” Utomi declared.

He emphasised that the existing political framework often corrupts even the most well-intentioned individuals, who are forced to prioritize personal or party interests over national welfare.

Utomi’s proposed party, which he described as a coalition of “mea culpa and new value cohorts,” aims to unite figures from across the political spectrum, including repentant politicians from previous administrations and leaders committed to a new set of values.

These groups, he said, would work together to foster a culture of integrity, work ethics, and respect for human dignity.

The new party seeks to disrupt the entrenched political order and cultivate a civic culture that prioritises the collective good over individual gain.

“We are talking about value-driven citizenship with integrity, work ethics, respect for the dignity of people, regard for labour,” he stated.

Utomi outlined his immediate plans to galvanise support for this initiative, including scheduled meetings in Lagos and Abuja and a forthcoming news conference.

His efforts are aimed at building a substantial base of support before his return to the United States.

This announcement follows Utomi’s discussions earlier this year with prominent leaders from several opposition parties, including Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Peter Obi of the Labour Party, and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP.

These talks were part of his broader strategy to unite various factions against the APC and forge a formidable coalition capable of winning the 2027 elections.

With this new political movement, Prof. Utomi hopes to inspire a shift towards a governance model that genuinely serves the Nigerian people, fostering a sense of national unity and purpose.
