Pat Utomi Warns Nigeria Risks ‘Ultimate Collapse’ if Institutions Continue to Weaken

ENUGU, Nigeria — Political economist Pat Utomi has warned that Nigeria could face severe instability if confidence in its elections, laws, and public institutions continues to deteriorate.
Utomi, a former presidential candidate, told the 22nd All Nigeria Editors Conference in Enugu on Thursday, September 24, 2026, that credible elections and strong institutions were essential to maintaining public confidence in government.
“If nothing changes, Nigeria will collapse and it will cost millions of lives,” Utomi said, describing what he believed could follow prolonged institutional failure.

Utomi Questions Confidence in Elections
Utomi argued that elections serve an important function beyond choosing political leaders because they give governments legitimacy in the eyes of citizens.
He said that purpose was undermined when people became convinced that elections could not meaningfully affect who governed them.
The conference, organised by the Nigerian Guild of Editors, was held under the theme, “The Ballot, the Media and the Task of Keeping Democracy Alive.”
Utomi linked the quality of democratic government to the strength of institutions, saying predictable rules help reduce uncertainty and create conditions in which economic and social activity can develop.
He said Nigeria had increasingly normalised practices that weakened those boundaries, increasing what he described as the cost and uncertainty of participating in the country’s economic and political systems.
He characterised the possible destination of that trajectory as “ultimate collapse”.
Warning Over Public Frustration
Utomi said prolonged public belief that citizens lacked meaningful ways of influencing their government could eventually produce anger and disorder.
He cited Somalia and Sudan while discussing countries where institutional and political breakdown had contributed to prolonged instability.
His comparison was presented as a warning rather than a prediction based on a stated timetable or quantitative assessment.
Utomi also called on journalists and lawyers to help defend democratic institutions.
He described editors and journalists as important gatekeepers and said clear laws were necessary to establish predictable standards of conduct.
The two-day conference brought together editors, government officials, academics, lawyers, and other participants to discuss elections, democracy, press freedom, and the growing challenge of artificial intelligence-driven disinformation.
