President Jonathan Extends Emergency Rule In Borno, Adamawa, Yobe

Following the increasing attacks by Boko Haram insurgents,the National Defence Council (NDC) has on Monday, November 17, 2014,  approved the extension of the state of emergency in three north-eastern states including Borno, Yobe and Adamawa.

The attorney general of the Federation and minister of justice, Mr Mohammed Adoke who gave the hint after a meeting of the council presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan at the presidential Villa, Abuja noted that the president would soon forward a request to the National Assembly for its approval.

He said, “We just reviewed the issue of the state of emergency and the government would be requesting the National Assembly to extend.”

The emergency rule in the three states have been extended thrice, with the third tranche renewed in May this year which expired on Sunday, November 16, 2014.

The two chambers of the National Assembly granted the president’s request for the third extension on May 20.
