BROWNSVILLE, United States — RJ Mitte, the American actor who portrayed Walter White Jr. in the television drama Breaking Bad and became an advocate for people with disabilities, died on Monday, October 12, 2026. He was 34.
Mitte’s death in Brownsville, Texas, was confirmed by his family and local authorities.
The Brownsville Police Department told CNN that officers responded to an emergency call around midday and found the actor dead when they arrived.
Police said there was no indication of foul play, although an investigation remained underway.

Mitte, who had cerebral palsy, became widely recognised for playing Walter “Flynn” White Jr., the teenage son of Bryan Cranston’s character, Walter White, in AMC’s Breaking Bad.
He appeared throughout the five-season series, which aired from 2008 to 2013 and received numerous honours, including an award for outstanding ensemble performance from the Screen Actors Guild.
In a statement issued through his representatives, Mitte’s family acknowledged his death and drew attention to his work on behalf of people with disabilities.
The family said he had used his public profile to challenge misconceptions about disability and encourage greater inclusion in entertainment.

From Teenage Actor to Television Star
Mitte was born in Lafayette, Louisiana, in 1992.
His family relocated to Hollywood when he was 14 after his younger sister attracted the attention of a talent agent in Texas.
He began his career with minor television appearances, including background roles in Everybody Hates Chris and 7th Heaven. He also appeared briefly in Hannah Montana in 2007.
His career changed when he was selected to play Walter White’s son in Breaking Bad.
The character, like Mitte himself, had cerebral palsy, allowing the actor to draw on his personal experiences in portraying the physical challenges associated with the condition.

The series followed a chemistry teacher who became involved in manufacturing and distributing methamphetamine, with Mitte’s character occupying a central position in the family affected by his father’s criminal activities.
Reflecting on the programme in a recent appearance on The Joe Vulpis Podcast, Mitte said the cast had initially been unaware of the lasting attention the series would attract.
He also discussed his early experiences in acting, recalling that one of his first auditions had been for an anti-drug public service announcement.
In an Instagram post shared shortly before his death, Mitte revisited the possibility of continuing the fictional White family’s story.

His career extended beyond Breaking Bad, including a recurring part in the television drama Switched at Birth.
In 2021, he starred in Triumph, a film about a teenager with cerebral palsy seeking to join his school’s wrestling team.
He also appeared alongside Finn Wittrock in the 2026 film Westhampton.

Advocacy for Disability Representation
Outside his acting career, Mitte worked with organisations supporting people with disabilities.
He served as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s and participated in philanthropic activities through The Mitte Foundation.
His public advocacy frequently addressed the obstacles faced by disabled performers seeking opportunities in film and television.
In an interview with Able Magazine, he discussed the importance of allowing people with disabilities to portray a broader range of characters rather than restricting them to roles defined by their conditions.
Mitte also spoke publicly about the expectations he had encountered while growing up with cerebral palsy.
Discussing Triumph in a 2021 interview, he recalled being told during childhood that his condition could prevent him from walking or speaking properly and limit his opportunities later in life.
He credited his family with rejecting those assumptions and encouraging him to pursue his ambitions.

‘Breaking Bad’ Cast Pays Tribute
Cranston, who portrayed Mitte’s father in Breaking Bad, expressed grief in a Facebook tribute.
The actor recalled meeting Mitte when he was a teenager and watching him develop professionally during their years working together.
Cranston also praised the determination with which Mitte approached the demanding production schedule.
“I’ll miss you, son,” Cranston wrote.
Dean Norris, who played Drug Enforcement Administration agent Hank Schrader in the series, described Mitte’s death as “heartbreaking” in a post on X.
Norris recalled looking after the young actor during filming and extended his condolences to Mitte’s family.
Oh my God! Was working just found out about RJ
I am heartbroken
Though RJ didn’t play my TV son, I always looked out for him as a young kid on set. He was a sweetheart of a young man and will be greatly missed. This is so heartbreaking, I can’t believe it. Thinking of him and his family.

Aaron Paul, who portrayed Jesse Pinkman, also expressed sorrow in a statement reported by The Hollywood Reporter, describing the death as a personal loss.
AMC, the television network that broadcast Breaking Bad, joined the tributes.
In a statement published on Instagram, the network acknowledged Mitte’s performance in the series and his contribution to the programme’s enduring popularity.
The actor’s family has asked for privacy following his death.
