Sad Loss: South African Olympic Hero Killed In A Car Crash

South Africa’s Olympic silver medalist and former world 800m champion, Mbulaeni Mulaudzi has died in a car accident on Friday, October 24, 2014.

This was confirmed by the minister of sports and recreation, Fikile Mbalula and his agent, Peet van Zyl.

The 34-year-old athlete, who won the global title in Berlin in 2009, had retired from the sport in 2013 after struggling with knee injuries.

Van Zyl, who is also Oscar Pistorius’s agent, had said that details of the accident has not been gathered but the family of the deceased has confirmed the athlete’s death.

Mulaudzi secured the silver medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics and bagged three medals at the biennial World Indoor Championships.

The SA Press Association, Sports and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula’s office has also spoken to confirm Mulaudzi’s death.

“Further details of his death will be divulged once the minister has interacted with his family. The Minister sends his heartfelt condolences to the Family of Mbulaeni Mulaudzi,” Mbalula said.
