GRAZ, Austria — At least eight people have been killed and several others injured in a mass shooting at a secondary school in the southern Austrian city of Graz on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, local authorities and media report.

The attack took place at BORG Dreierschützengasse, a secondary school in the northwest part of the city.

According to Austria’s public broadcaster ORF, the victims include one adult and seven students.

The total number of those injured has not been confirmed, but both students and teachers were among the wounded.

A police spokesperson in Graz told NBC News that “several people have been killed” and that the situation is now “under control.”

“There is no longer a danger for the public,” the spokesman said, although police continued to urge residents to stay away from the area and follow instructions from emergency services.

Authorities have yet to confirm whether the shooter is among the dead or injured, but said they are operating under the assumption that only one suspect was involved.

The shooting prompted a major emergency response, with tactical police units, medical services, and a helicopter dispatched to the school shortly after gunshots were reported.

Fritz Grundnig, a police spokesman, told ORF that officers evacuated the school after receiving reports of shots fired inside the building.

Injured individuals were transported to Helmut List Hall, an events venue nearby, which was converted into an emergency care centre.

A meeting point for parents and guardians was established at the ASKÖ football stadium, where authorities are helping families reconnect with students and providing psychological support.

Police have not yet disclosed the identity or motive of the suspected shooter.

The Austrian Interior Ministry has not responded to media inquiries, and a press conference has been scheduled for later today to provide further details.

Austrian police posted a statement on X (formerly Twitter), confirming that a criminal investigation is ongoing and that a special platform has been set up for members of the public to submit information or tips related to the incident.

This attack is among the deadliest school shootings in Austria’s recent history, a country where such incidents are exceedingly rare.
