Septuagenarian Dies Suddenly During Court Hearing in Ondo

AKURE, Nigeria — A septuagenarian, whose identity remains unknown, collapsed and died during a court session at the Ondo State High Court on Wednesday, May 22, 2024.

The elderly man was attending the court to witness a case involving his friend.

A court clerk, who requested anonymity, recounted the incident to our reporter.

“The man was in court with his friend and suddenly, he stood up where he was seated and fell down, hitting his head on the tiles and he passed on. He didn’t look like someone who was sick and he didn’t interact with anyone but suddenly gave up,” the clerk said.

The sudden collapse occurred just as the case was being called for appearance. The deceased reportedly showed no prior signs of illness and had not engaged with anyone before the incident.

Policemen from the Enu-Owa Division in Ondo were promptly called to the scene. They collected the body and transferred it to the morgue for further investigation.

Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the state, confirmed the incident to the press.

She stated that the matter is under investigation and has been transferred to the homicide section of the police headquarters in Akure.
