South Eastern governors on Sunday, July 5, 2015 said they are opposed to the relocation of boko haram prisoners to the region.
This is the first time the governors of the zone are meeting since the new government came into power.
In meeting hosted by the Imo state governor, Rocas Okorocha, the governors lamented decision, stating that the move by the federal is already creating fear and security tension in the zone.
Addressing newsmen after the three-hour meeting, the Imo state governor said the decision should be rescinded and that the move was not in the best interest so the decision should be rescinded.
He said that the move would have a negative effect on the psyche of the people in the zone even though its a security issue.
“We are appealing to the Federal Government to have a rethink on the relocation of the of the Boko Haram suspects. If there is any place they should be relocated to it should be Abuja where they have enough security. The issue is already creating security concern in the zone”.
The governor also stated that there are no plans by the Governors to recall the Igbos from the North, stressing that, “we are all part of the entity called Nigeria and we share in the plight of our brothers in the North East, so it is not the issue of recalling the Igbo in any part of the country but to make sure that they are secured anywhere they find themselves”.
