Spirit and Life Devotional is a daily publication by Pastor Chinaemerem Ibezim, senior pastor of Able Ministers Chapel, a church based in Calabar, Cross River State.
“Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’” – Hebrews 13:5 NKJV
What’s covetousness? Bible dictionaries define covetousness as a “strong desire to have that which belongs to another”; “a strong desire after the possession of worldly things”; and “an inordinate love of money.”
17 of 25 translations of the Bible, of our subject verse, say “Don’t love money” or “Keep your life free from the love of money”. God’s Word Translation says, “Don’t love money. Be happy with what you have because God has said, ‘I will never abandon you or leave you.”
Does God want us to have money? Of course! You can’t do nearly everything without money. But what we must not have is the love of money. It’s the root of all evil. Why’s there so much evil in the world today? The love of money. And sadly, even the church isn’t helping with so much preaching about money and us requesting for more and more of it. Brothers and sisters, God’s blessings will not be on what we do if it is primarily motivated by the love of money.
God wants us to trust Him and He has said that He will never leave us or abandon us. We must learn to trust Him daily. And we have a choice: to believe His word or not. I pray we do. Amen.
