There are not many times that God asked people to try Him; but when He talked about tithing, He asked men to try Him. That’s to show you how important it is to tithe.
During the famine in Egypt, a time came when the money of the Egyptians finished; then they exchanged their livestock for food; and when they had nothing else to give in exchange for food, they said to Joseph; “Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be servants of Pharaoh; give us seed, that we may live and not die, that the land may not be desolate.” Then Joseph said to the people, “Indeed I have bought you and your land this day for Pharaoh. Look, here is seed for you, and you shall sow the land. And it shall come to pass in the harvest that you shall give one-fifth to Pharaoh. Four-fifths shall be your own, as seed for the field and for your food, for those of your households and as food for your little ones.”
The point is this: when you see everything you have as God’s property, and commit it to Him, He becomes responsible for your sustenance. Again, when God has empowered you to make money, He is entitled to a portion of it. Pharaoh took twenty percent of the people’s income, but God is only asking for ten percent yet a lot of us find it difficult to give tithes. God loses nothing when we don’t tithe, we are the ones who will not receive the blessings of tithing.
