5 Killed, 11 Injured In Suicide Bomb Attack In Gombe

No fewer than five persons were on Friday, January 16, 2015 killed and 11 others injured following an attack by a suicide bomber believed to be a member of the Islamist extremists around a market in Gombe  state.

The state head of operation of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Saidu Ahmed Minin, made this disclosure to journalists in the state.

He said, “It was a suicide bombing.

“Six people were killed including the bomber and 11 others were injured. We evacuated them to the hospital.”

According to Vanguard, witnesses said the blast went off at 7:25 pm (1825 GMT) in the packed market neighbourhood of Kasuwar Arawa, close to the public university in Gombe, which is capital of Gombe state.

Narrating the incident, a taxi driver, Idris Babandada told AFP by telephone that the bomber set off the bomb at a charging station where people were waiting to recharge their phones.

He said, “The bomber went into the crowd of people waiting to recharge their telephones at a public charging station and then set off the explosive.

“The explosion shook the whole neighbourhood.”

The injured victims were said to be receiving treatment from some volunteers and nurses since the medical doctors in the state had embarked on a strike action.
