OGBOGBO, Nigeria — Six friends tragically lost their lives after reportedly consuming alcohol at a friend’s home in Ogbogbo, Ijebu North-East Local Government Area of Ogun State, the police confirmed on Saturday, July 22, 2023.
The fatal incident occurred on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, at a drinking gathering, where seven friends had assembled for a social occasion.
According to a local source, there was a heated argument between the deceased individuals and another party at the gathering.
However, the issue was allegedly resolved, followed by the individual offering a bottle of drink to commemorate their reconciliation.
“Except for the seventh person, who reportedly served the drink from his home and abstained from it, all those that had the drink died,” the source said.
News spread throughout the town a few hours after the gathering dispersed, revealing that two individuals had died and four others were hospitalized.
The four hospitalized individuals later succumbed to their conditions the following day.
In the wake of the incident, the individual who offered the drink is reportedly to have fled the area.
Omolola Odutola, the Public Relations Officer for Ogun State Police Command, confirmed the incident to journalists.
She stated, “I just confirmed that something like that occurred but the families said they were not pressing charges and prefer to bury their dead.”
The incident has heightened anxiety in Ogbogbo, leaving the residents shocked and mournful, while raising questions about the exact circumstances surrounding the tragic deaths. The police are continuing their investigations into the matter.

“The Divisional Police Officer for Isara, Bankole Eluyeru, led a team of officers to the scene upon receiving the call,” Odutola said. However, their attempt to apprehend Shodola was met with violent resistance.
The PPRO further detailed, “The suspect fiercely resisted arrest, using the machete on the Divisional Police Officer and his men.” Ultimately, the police team succeeded in neutralizing Shodola in self-defense.
Odutola dismissed initial rumors that Shodola was mentally ill, stating, “From the intelligence gathered by the police, there was no report of the suspect being mentally challenged.”
The shocking crime has prompted fear and unease within the Iperu community.
Local authorities have called for calm, assuring residents that the situation is under control and an investigation into the incident is underway.
