KATSINA, Nigeria — A notorious bandit leader known as Jankare was shot dead during a confrontation with a rival armed group in Katsina State, bringing an end to his reported involvement in kidnappings, cattle rustling, and attacks on communities in the region.
Jankare, also known as Jan Kare Uban Alfahari, was killed following a disagreement with another bandit commander over criminal activities and territorial control around Dutsinma.
His death was first reported in October 2025, with security analyst Zagazola Makama revisiting the circumstances in a report published by News Express on Tuesday, September 22, 2026.
According to earlier reporting by Zagazola Makama, Jankare had attended a meeting involving bandit leaders before a disagreement with rival commanders escalated into an armed confrontation.
The dispute reportedly concerned the activities of armed groups and control of territory in the Dutsinma area of Katsina State.
Jankare was subsequently shot dead during the confrontation.
The identity of the rival commander responsible for the killing and the precise circumstances of the encounter were not independently established.
Before his death, Jankare had reportedly been involved in attacks on communities across Dutsinma and neighbouring local government areas.
He also maintained a presence on social media, including TikTok, where he appeared in videos displaying weapons and making statements directed at security personnel.
His activities had attracted attention amid continuing attacks, kidnappings, and cattle theft attributed to armed groups operating in north-western Nigeria.
Following his reported killing, security personnel monitored developments in the area amid concerns about possible retaliatory violence between rival armed groups.
The Katsina State Police Command had not provided an independently verified account of the confrontation or confirmed whether any arrests had been made in connection with Jankare’s death.
