ABUJA, Nigeria — Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has praised President Bola Tinubu for lifting the six-month emergency rule in Rivers State, describing the move as a demonstration of commitment to peace and democracy.

In a statement issued late Wednesday, September 17, 2025, by his special assistant on public communications and social media, Lere Olayinka, Wike said the president’s intervention restored the confidence of Rivers people in his leadership.

“From Rivers State going forward, the only news that will emanate will be that of peace, progress and development,” the minister said.

President Tinubu had earlier announced the end of the emergency period, directing suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to resume office from Thursday, September 18, 2025.

The emergency rule, declared in March, followed a protracted political crisis that paralysed governance in the oil-rich state.

Wike commended Rivers residents for supporting the president’s efforts to stabilise the state.

He also called on political stakeholders to set aside differences and work harmoniously in the collective interest of the people.

He cautioned politicians attempting to exploit the crisis for personal gain to stay away from Rivers, warning that such actions would undermine the state’s fragile return to peace.
