The only people who never fail are the ones who never try at all so, don’t treat a failure as an absolute disaster, put a positive spin on things and look at what you have learned. As Henry Ford once said: ‘Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently’, and he didn’t do too badly, did he? Here are ten ways to take failure in the chin and benefit from it:

1. Just accept it

Everyone fails, once in a while, so accept that what’s done is done and move on to the next project. There is no point in worrying about what you cannot change and, if you do, it will only hold you back.

2. Learn from the experience

Failure and rejection aren’t pleasant experiences, but they can be valuable ones. One way to benefit from failure is to make sure that you learn from it. So, don’t feel down about it, think about what you might have done differently and then you can avoid it happening again.

3. Learn when to quit

We can also learn when it’s time to quit from a failure. Failures only become disasters when people aren’t prepared to accept it, like the gambler, who places one more bet or, the person in a bad relationship, who gives it ‘just six months more’.

4. Take advice and feedback

You can analyse a failure and try and understand what really went wrong. Take the emotion out of the situation by asking other people for their thoughts and advice. Don’t take feedback personally though; this is an opportunity to learn.

5. It can teach you to be more humble

Confidence is one thing, but arrogance is another and a failure will soon teach you to be more humble. We could all do with reminding that we are not infallible, sometimes, it brings us back down to earth.

6. It will give you a thicker skin

The odd failure, or two, will help you to be less sensitive and more willing to accept criticism. Once you’ve been through a setback like this, you will come out of it a stronger and a better person.

7. It can clarify your goals

When you think you are sure what you want, a failure can sometimes make you rethink your plans and, what comes out of that is a clearer view of what is really important to you. A failed business person, for example, might find out just how important their family is to them.

8. It can teach you that you can’t do everything on your own

Many failures occur because people didn’t seek help when they needed it or were unwilling to take the advice of people close to them. This could teach you that no one is an island and it might make you more willing to listen in the future.

9. It gives you the opportunity to help others

We all become a little wiser through our failures and that means that we might be able to help other people not make the same mistakes that we did. Now you are able to give advice to friends on the matter, or you could even write a book about it!

10. Don’t give up!

Treat a failure as a setback and not the end of the world. You might change direction or you might try something new, but whatever you do, don’t give up trying altogether. Remember the old saying of ‘as one door shuts, another one opens’. It’s true, you know.

Stay happy!
