35-year old Banjo Omotosho and his wife, Ebun have been arraigned before a magistrate court sitting in Somolu for allegedly forging his death certificate in an attempt to defraud the Niger Insurance Company of N1.08m in a life insurance fraud attempt.
Punch gathered that the couple had approached the company to take a life insurance in May 2014, paying a premium of N50,000 under the fake names Ojo Alabi Kingsley, and Ojo Motunrayo, claiming Ebun (Motunrayo) was his (Banjo’s) daughter and next of kin.
Ebun the presented a police report to the insurance firm, together with a fake death certificate signed by on Dr. Lawal of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, dated Thursday, May 29, 2014 indicating that Banjo had died of hemorrhagic shock. Both documents were accompanied by an attending physician certificate that “Alabi Ojo Kingsley” had been in his (doctor’s) care for two years and was co-signed by two law firms in Gbagada area of Lagos.
The fraudulent intentions of the pair was exposed when Niger Insurance Company tried verifying the purported address made available as part of the concluding process to verify their claims.
They were susequently arrested and arraigned on a 3-count charge of conspiracy, forgery and intent to defraud, charged they pleaded not guilty to
The charges read in part, “That you, Banjo Omotosho and Ebun Omotosho, on September 22 at about 10am at Niger Insurance Plc on Ikorodu Road, Anthony Village, fraudulently forged the death certificate of one Ojo Alabi Kingsley with intent to claim N1,080,000 on behalf of Ojo Motunrayo who is his next of kin.”
The magistrate, Mrs Bola Osunsanmi, granted them bail in the sum of N200,000 each, with two sureties in like sum, adjourning the case till Tuesday, December 10, 2014
