ASABA, Nigeria — Boat operators found a university student’s body in the Otogwu River in Delta State on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, two days after flooding swept her away.
Ejiro Terry Etacherure, Delta State’s commissioner for special duties, said the operators alerted the State Emergency Management Agency from the Anwai Road area.
The agency had enlisted divers to search for the student.
A relative was asked to identify the body, which an ambulance took to the Asaba Specialist Hospital morgue, Etacherure said.
Her father survived and was taken to hospital. According to Punch, floodwater forced their Toyota Corolla into a drain at Okotimi Layout, behind the hospital, on Monday.
A source told the newspaper that the father was driving his daughter to her industrial training placement.
The student’s uncle, Andy Emephia, called for attention to the drainage.
Residents also sought improvements, saying other vehicles had entered the canal during earlier floods.
One unnamed resident said the channel could not accommodate the volume of water during heavy rain.
