#BuhariGate: Of Immorality, Selfishness, and Deception, By @favourafolabi

Must read

[dropcap]I[/dropcap] insist that:

1. It is IMMORAL for Muhammadu Buhari to receive COMPENSATION for his bombed SUVs during an election year and not declare same in a public statement when he received the SUVs. Especially, considering that the amoured SUVs came from the office of the National Security Adviser rather than the Presidency which is primarily responsible for the emoluments of ex-Presidents.

2. It is equally SELFISH of Buhari to receive these items when he had consistently refused to attend Council of State meetings with other ex-Presidents. Especially when the nation was boiling down with Boko Haram – a time, his experience as a soldier would have counted in such meetings.

3. It is also DECEPTIVE of Buhari “to have receive BILLIONS of Naira in campaign donations” to his campaign and not declare same as well. He should immediately lead by example by publish the audited figures for his campaign – listing out the donors, the size of the donations, the recipients of these funds; and the contractors that worked on the campaign.

The right examples must be set here – considering the leading party – All Progressives Congress (APC) has also refused to discuss the subject of “Formalized Campaign Financing”. The APC cannot be selective in its fight to probe funding of campaigns in Nigeria. Bourdillon Plc should be investigated for its roles in serving as “the collection center” for the Buhari Campaign; even as it should also be probed for its funding of APC elections all over the nation especially in the South-West, over the last couple of years.

If this is not done, we would inevitably have another #DasukiGate on our hands – at the national and state levels leading to the 2019 elections.

It is time to finally discuss and institute appropriately legislation to govern campaign financing in Nigeria – a subject the majority of our elites shy away from.

There is no better time than now to do so even as there is no better person to lead the conversation than the President who is the  number one leader of the ruling party.
