Britton gained the trust of a family and was allowed to babysit the boy
A 66-year-old man has been jailed for a minimum of five years for raping a three-year-old boy he was babysitting.
Barry John Britton, of Westminster, befriended a family and gained their trust sufficiently to be allowed to babysit the child, police said.
The alarm was raised after a talk between the boy and his grandmother.
A Southwark Crown Court, Britton admitted four counts of sexual assault, including two counts of rape, after deciding to change his plea.
Britton initially refused to co-operate with police but on 9 May he changed his mind.
He received a life sentence, with a minimum term of five years.
Det Sgt Tom Haines said: “Barry John Britton is a predatory offender who befriended this family in order to abuse their child.”
He said their son and other young children were now “safe from this dangerous man”.
Britton was also ordered to sign the sex offenders register for life and was made subject to a sexual offence prevention order.
