ABIA, NIGERIA – Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State revealed on Thursday, March 30, 2023, that he had warned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) about the “Peter Obi effect” before the presidential election.
Peter Obi, who had defected from the PDP to the Labour Party (LP) before the party’s presidential primary, has since become a household name among Nigerians who believe he should be the country’s next president.
In a statement, Governor Ikpeazu said, “That Peter Obi effect, I predicted it and told my party. I even volunteered that reasonable politicians should not ignore what Peter Obi was doing.”
The governor went on to question the future direction of Obi’s growing support:
The governor said, “What would happen going forward will be determined by how Peter Obi manages the groundswell of support that he had gathered. How is he going to funnel this towards an agenda that can eventually materialise in his dream?”
Governor Ikpeazu’s comments mirror those of several PDP leaders like the former governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, and former information minister, Labaran Maku.
