An unidentified man has committed suicide in a Lagos Court house after he spent 6 months in prison over a debt of N40,000.

The man reportedly jumped from the 3rd-story of the Lagos State Magistrate Court in Ogba on Wednesday, December 6, 2017.

According to Twitter user @O_Nife, a lawyer, the man had been remanded in prison for the past 6 months, and had after his case jumped from the 3rd floor.

“This man jumped from the 3rd floor of the Lagos State Magistrate Court in Ogba. He owed 40k. Been in prison on remand for the past 6 months. After his case today, he took the leap to his death. The law should have a human face. This is very sad,” he wrote as he shared three graphic photos.

The images are very graphic. Viewer discretion is advised.

The man’s body can be seen lying on a staircase inside a pool of blood. Prison officials are seen standing closeby.

This is a sad day for the criminal justice system in Nigeria which is badly in need of an overhaul.

Same day this tragedy took place,  Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari pardoned 500 inmates of the Kurmawa Central Prisons in Kano metropolis as part of Federal Government’s efforts to decongest prisons.

Buhari granted the pardon when he arrived at the place in company with the state Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and others. He called for prison reform.
