Man Sentenced To Death By Hanging For Stealing Handset And 10,000 In Delta

A man identified as Vincent Okwekwu has been sentenced to death by hanging for stealing a handset and N10,000 from his victims at gunpoint at Umueha quarters, Ibusa of Delta State.

Delta State High Court sitting in Akwukwu-Igbo charged and convicted the defendant on three counts bordering on conspiracy to commit armed robbery even though he made a plea oof innocence.

According to Punch, Okwekwu was sentenced to death by hanging for the offence of conspiracy, while he got 21-year-jail term for each of the other two counts.

During the hearing, the prosecuting counsel from the Department of Public Prosecutions disclosed that the defendant committed the offence on November 1, 2009 with two of his fleeing cohorts.

The trio, armed with a gun and cutlass,  stormed the apartments of their victims, Ofoyeju Peter and Tietie Moses, and robbed them of N10, 000 and a handset.

The attention of the men of the vigilante group in the area was attracted by the victims following their loud screams for help.

Okwekwu was subsequently arrested and dragged to the court where he was finally arraigned.
