AMMAN, Jordan — Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Global Digital Polytechnic has begun operations as an online institution offering practical training for the digital economy.
Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, founder and chairman of Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Global Digital, formally introduced the institution during a virtual ceremony on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.
Academics, technology specialists, intellectuals and media professionals from the Arab region and other parts of the world attended the event.
The institution, known as TAG.GDP, has six colleges offering 240 specialised programmes, according to figures announced during the ceremony. It had enrolled 250 students and graduated 52 before its formal launch.
Abu-Ghazaleh described the polytechnic as a “global project” intended to provide education without geographical or national restrictions.
He said the digital model would allow students to study without incurring the travel expenses traditionally associated with obtaining an education outside their home countries.
Training for the Digital Economy
The institution said its programmes would combine technical instruction with practical application in fields including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data science and digital transformation.
Its courses are intended to prepare learners for occupations expected to experience growing demand as technology changes the global labour market.
Abu-Ghazaleh said the polytechnic was not established to replace or compete with universities.
He described it as a parallel form of education designed to address differences between academic training and the skills employers require.
The institution’s emphasis on practical projects and technical competence reflects what Abu-Ghazaleh described as the need to move beyond educational systems centred on memorisation and examinations.
He said education should instead encourage creativity, innovation and the application of knowledge.
Abu-Ghazaleh also linked unemployment partly to the failure of educational institutions to adapt quickly enough to technological change. He said the new polytechnic would seek to give graduates the theoretical and practical abilities needed to enter the digital economy.
An Idea Dating to 1995
Abu-Ghazaleh said the institution grew from work he began in 1995, when he was elected chairman of a United Nations committee of experts concerned with professional qualifications and standards.
He said he had since pursued an educational model that could serve learners in different countries while advancing international objectives for access to education.
The institution was launched from the Arab world, he said, in recognition of the region’s contribution to the history of education. He cited the University of Al-Qarawiyyin as an early landmark in that history.
The launch coincided with World Humanitarian Day, which is observed annually on August 19. Abu-Ghazaleh said the timing reflected the institution’s stated commitment to making education available internationally.
Partnerships and Online Access
TAG.GDP has begun developing partnerships with universities and other educational institutions, according to Abu-Ghazaleh. The collaborations are intended to widen access to its programmes and incorporate academic offerings from partner institutions.
He said the objective of those partnerships was to prepare students for employment in a knowledge-based economy rather than compete with established universities.
The polytechnic plans to provide a broad selection of online educational programmes for people seeking qualifications and digital employment skills.
Abu-Ghazaleh said proficiency in emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, would become increasingly important as knowledge assumed a greater role in employment and wealth creation.
The institution said its teaching model would prioritise hands-on learning and require students to apply what they had studied. Its stated objective is to prepare learners to solve practical problems, develop new ideas and adapt to technological change.
