ABEOKUTA, Nigeria – The Ogun State Government has announced that it sanctioned 175 noise polluters and closed down 45 others in 2024 as part of its efforts to combat noise pollution across the state.
According to a statement issued by the Commissioner for Environment, Dr Ola Oresanya, the offenders include religious centres, entertainment venues, and commercial outlets that exceeded the legally permissible noise levels.
The announcement coincided with the 2025 International Noise Awareness Day observed on Wednesday, April 30, 2025
Oresanya described noise pollution as not just an environmental issue, but also a growing public health concern that disrupts the lives of residents.
“Noise pollution is not only an environmental issue but also a nuisance that has significant impact on the lives of the people and a serious public concern,” he said.
He reminded the public of the maximum permissible noise levels in various zones across the state:
-
Residential areas: 50 decibels (day), 35 decibels (night)
-
Places of worship: 60 decibels (day), 40 decibels (night)
-
Entertainment and commercial centres: 60 decibels (day), 40 decibels (night)
Dr Oresanya urged residents, community leaders, and operators of religious and commercial establishments to adhere strictly to these standards or face government sanctions.
