ABEOKUTA, Nigeria – Police in Ogun State have arrested two men for allegedly stealing and slaughtering a prized Savannah he-goat worth N200,000 to celebrate the naming ceremony of one of the suspects’ newborn baby.

The suspects, identified as Akintoye Waris and his alleged accomplice, Ajayi Yusuf, were apprehended on January 2, following investigations by the Ogun State Police Command.

The Command’s spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the arrests and outlined the events leading to their capture.

According to Odutola, the theft occurred on December 27, 2024, when Waris and Yusuf allegedly trespassed on a farm owned by a livestock farmer known as Mark.

The farmer had taken his cattle out for grazing during the Christmas holiday, leaving the farm temporarily unattended.

When Mark returned, he discovered one of his goats was missing and initiated a search. Members of the community reported seeing the suspects with the missing goat on a motorcycle, heading toward Olodo town.

Acting on this tip-off, detectives were dispatched and arrested the two men in the early hours of January 2.

Confession and Investigation

During interrogation, the suspects reportedly confessed to stealing the goat, slaughtering it, and using it to prepare food for the naming ceremony of Waris’s daughter.

The event was held in Olodo shortly after the goat was killed.

“They explained how they carried out the theft, transported the goat, and later prepared it for the celebration,” said Odutola.

“The suspects are currently in custody and undergoing further investigation at the Odeda Divisional Crime branch.”

Reactions and Next Steps

The incident has sparked conversations in the local community about the pressures of cultural practices and celebrations that sometimes lead individuals to engage in criminal activities.

Odutola assured residents that the suspects would be prosecuted in court once investigations are concluded.

“We are committed to ensuring justice is served in this matter,” she said, promising updates as the case progresses.

Residents in the Odeda area have expressed relief at the swift action of the police, with some calling for increased vigilance to deter similar crimes.

For now, the suspects remain in custody, awaiting further legal proceedings.
