LANCASTER, United States — Measles caused the death of an infant from Pennsylvania’s Amish community, the Lancaster County coroner confirmed on Friday.
Stephen Diamantoni, the county coroner, announced the finding on Friday, September 4, 2026.
His determination marked the first time the county coroner had attributed a child’s death to measles during the outbreak.
Pennsylvania officials had announced in August that two people infected with measles had died. Federal health officials subsequently disputed the classification of those deaths.
Diamantoni said he did not know whether the infant whose death he confirmed was one of the two cases previously announced by the state.
