Small beginnings can feel embarrassing when the vision in our hearts is much larger than the resources in our hands.
In 1904, educator Mary McLeod Bethune opened a school for Black girls in Daytona Beach, Florida. She began with $1.50, five girls and her young son.
The school had few materials. Bethune used discarded crates for furniture and found creative ways to raise money and obtain supplies. What began in a modest rented building eventually developed into Bethune Cookman University.
Bethune also became an influential civil rights leader and adviser on African American affairs. But the institution that became her most enduring legacy began with resources that appeared completely inadequate for the vision.

Small Does Not Mean Insignificant
We often judge a beginning by its present appearance. God sees what faithful work can become.
A small congregation, business, ministry, idea or opportunity may not attract attention. That does not make it meaningless.
Every mature tree once existed as a seed. The beginning does not need to resemble the final vision. It only needs to contain the life required for growth.
Begin With What You Have
Bethune could have waited for a larger building, more money or better equipment. Instead, she began with what was available and worked to obtain what was still needed.
Faith is not an excuse for poor planning. Bethune raised funds, built partnerships, recruited supporters and solved practical problems.
Trusting God and working diligently are not opposites. Faith begins the journey, while discipline helps carry the vision forward.

Stop Comparing Your Beginning
Discouragement grows when we compare our first steps with another person’s established success.
You may be looking at their finished building while standing on your empty land. You may be reading their tenth chapter while struggling to write your first sentence.
God is not asking you to begin with what someone else possesses. He is asking you to be faithful with what is presently in your hands.
Not every small project will become a great institution, but every act of obedience has value before God.
Do not wait until everything is available. Pray, plan and begin.
Do not despise small beginnings.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the vision and opportunities You have placed before me.
Deliver me from comparing my beginning with another person’s progress. Give me wisdom to recognise what is already in my hands and courage to begin with it.
Teach me to combine faith with discipline, planning and faithful work. Let every small step of obedience accomplish Your purpose.
