There was heavy security presence at Independence High School, Ukana West, Essien Udim, the polling unit of the Niger Delta affairs minister, Godswill Akpabio during the rerun election in the area.

Akpabio and his party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, had on Friday, January 24, 2020, withdrawn from the rerun citing irregularities by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, led by its resident electoral commissioner in the state, Mike Igini’s.

However, despite the withdrawal, there was palpable tension at Akpabio’s polling unit as heavily armed security operatives and armed thugs barred journalists and persons without permanent voters card, PVC, from passing through the gate of the school.

Daily Post observed that voting was going on in the three polling units located within the premises of the Independence High School, Ukana West.

There was a general low turnout of voters for the rerun.

Prince Ukpong Akpabio, the People’s Democratic Party stalwart and commissioner for Trade and Investment, said he called for the deployment of security personnel because of the plan by the APC to hijack election materials.

Voting also went on smoothly at Ukana Uwa East which has 2 polling units.
