NIGER – A riot policeman in his early 30s, identified as Corporal Tanko Usman, has allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service rifle – an AK-47, in Minna.

The unfortunate incident happened on Saturday, March 22, 2014 after Usman, who was attached to the Mobile Police Force 12, returned from his duty post at  one of the second generation banks in the state capital.

It was learnt that the corporal was seen parking his motorcycle by the road and trekking into the uncompleted building where he took his life.

Residents of the area, who heard the gun shot and rushed to the  scene, reportedly notified the Maitumbi Police Division, who in  turn contacted MOPOL 12, which sent some of its men to evacuate the body.

Niger State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Mr. Richard Oguche, reportedly confirmed the incident. He stated that the body had been deposited at IBB Specialist Hospital mortuary, Minna.
