Spirit and Life Devotional: The Practice Of Tithing In The Old Testament

Must read

Spirit and Life Devotional is a daily publication by Pastor Chinaemerem Ibezim, senior pastor of Able Ministers Chapel, a church based in Calabar, Cross River State.

“You must set aside a tithe of your crops—one-tenth of all the crops you harvest each year.” – Deuteronomy 14:22 NLT

Tithing was not done monthly in the Old Testament, as it is today, it was given yearly. Of course, they were farmers and not salary earners, so their tithes were from their annual harvests.

The tithes were not always given to the Levites. In the first two years, the people ate their tithes in the place of worship chosen by God with their households. Eating their tithes was an act of worship, and the purpose was for them to remember God as their Source and honour Him.

At the end of every third year, the tithe of that year’s harvest was taken to the storehouse and given to the Levites, because they had no farmlands of their own. However, the Levites did not get all the tithes; the foreigners, the orphans, and the widows were also given of the tithes, so that they could eat and be satisfied.

When they tithed as instructed, the Lord blessed all the works of their hands.

May God bless the works of your hands, in Jesus name. Amen.
