Spirit And Life Devotional: Godly And Christian Traditions

Must read

Spirit and Life Devotional is a daily publication by Pastor Chinaemerem Ibezim, senior pastor of Able Ministers Chapel, a church based in Calabar, Cross River State.

[pull_quote_center]”Therefore, brethren, stand fast and hold the traditions which you were taught, whether by word or our epistle.” II Thessalonians 2:15[/pull_quote_center]

There are traditions of men which have no place in Christianity: Jesus rebuked the Pharisees for making the word of God of no effect through their traditions. We live by the word of God and not by the traditions of the world, where we live.

But there are godly traditions, or Christian traditions, which we are supposed to hold onto. What are traditions? They are “that body of doctrine and discipline, or any article thereof, supposed to have been put forth by Christ or his apostles, and not committed to writing.” They are “inspired instructions from the lips of those who received them from God”; traditions are basically “teachings, written or spoken, handed down from generation to generation”.

As long as they don’t contradict the scriptures traditions are good and beneficial. Tithing and giving of offerings in church, for instance, are traditions being practiced today. Paul wrote to the Corinthians, “Now I praise you, brethren, that you remember me in all things and keep the traditions just as I delivered them to you.” I Corinthians 11:2. May God give us more understanding. Amen.
