Supreme Court of Nigeria Opens the Bench: Calls for Nominations to Fill 8 Seats

ABUJA, Nigeria – The Supreme Court of Nigeria is set to fill eight vacancies among its ranks.

Following the retirement of several Justices, there are 21 available slots, with eight being urgently needed across different regions.

The vacancies are distributed as follows: North-Central (2), North-West (1), South-East (2), South-South (1), South-West (2); however, there are no vacancies for the North-East.

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Olukayode Ariwoola, has called upon several groups in the legal profession and the judiciary to put forward nominations.

These groups include the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, heads of courts, and judges from the nation’s highest court.

Yakubu Maikyau, NBA President, issued a memo to lawyers after receiving the call for nominations from Ariwoola on Friday, June 16, 2023.

In his message, Maikyau stated that the CJN asked him “to nominate suitably qualified candidates to be recommended for appointment to the Supreme Court of Nigeria”.

Interested lawyers from the mentioned regions are required to submit their expression of interest to the NBA secretariat in Abuja by June 21, 2023.

This development comes as part of the efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s judicial system and enhance the dispensation of justice in the country.
