The United States Transportation Security Administration’s acting administrator Melvin Carraway was reassigned on Monday, June 1, 2015 after investigators working undercover successfully smuggled fake explosives and forbidden weapons through TSA’s airport security.
The undercover operatives – from the Department Of Homeland Affairs- were successful in 67 of the 70 tests, a 95% failure rate.
The checks were conducted by Homeland Security “red teams” that posed as passengers. In one test, the airport security agents failed to find an explosive strapped to a tester’s back even during a pat-down.
Upon learning the initial findings of the Office of Homeland Security, its Inspector General, Jeh Johnson immediately directed TSA to implement a series of other actions, to make up for the discovered vulnerabilities several of which are now in place, agency officials said.
