Bowen University Alumni Demand Punishment For Students Involved In Riot

Must read

The Bowen University Alumni Association (BUAA) has thrown its weight behind the school authorities to condemn the recent  riotous act of the students in its entirety.

Following a spate of violent protest by students of Bowen University Iwo over various issues, the school had shut down all academic activities on March 19, 2014,

The BUAA called for a thorough investigation into the incident and the punishment of any student found culpable, reiterating that the students’ action in no way represents the high moral and academic excellence the university graduates and students alike are known for.

The old students made these resolutions at their emergency meeting held on Saturday March 22, 2014.

In a statement signed by Abayomi Kehinde, the General Secretary of the association, the association stated that:

“It condemns the apparent gap in communication between the university administration and the student community; and therefore implores the immediate exploration of strategic initiatives and avenues to bridge this gap as soon as possible. That every law binding on students that have been considered restrictive and excessive should be reviewed by the University in accordance with the terms and conditions applicable in the current Student Hand Book.”

The body also called on the university authorities to ensure “that the admission process of the University be reviewed to reflect the motto of the school that entrants should be of the highest possible academic and moral standards obtainable. That the administration of the university led by the Vice Chancellor liaise with numerous sister Baptist Universities worldwide that have existed for decades without incidences of this nature on their mode of administration, to foster a stable and robust relationship with the students of Bowen University to move the University to greater heights.

They stressed that the association is ever willing to partner with the university administration as deemed fit by both parties, adding that “members of the BUAA will continue to project the great light of our Alma Mata beyond the walls of the University, beyond the shores of Nigeria and around the world through Integrity, Excellence and Godliness in all dealing and engagements.”
