LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a welder, Aliu Tijani, who allegedly aided a suspected cultist, Wasiu Opeyemi, in removing his handcuffs after an escape from police custody.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest on Sunday, June 11, 2023, stating that the suspected cultist was originally arrested in 2021, but had managed to escape custody. Opeyemi was rearrested by the police force last week.
In a tweet from his official account on Sunday, June 11, 2023, @BenHundeyin, the PPRO stated, “Suspected cultist, Wasiu Opeyemi, escaped from police custody in August 2021 in handcuffs. Last week, he was re-arrested alongside Aliu Tijani, the welder who cut off the handcuffs when he escaped the first time.”

Hundeyin added that both suspects have since been arraigned and are currently in remand, facing justice for their respective roles in the incident.
