10 Die In Torrential China Downpours

Heavy rainfall has devastated eight provinces and one municipality in south China since Sunday, June 7,2015  resulting in 10 deaths and leaving four missing, the Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs announced on Tuesday, June 8.

According to Xinhua news, the downpours have triggered floods, landslides and hail storms in Zhejiang, Anhui, Fujian, Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan, Chongqing, Sichuan and Guizhou, a ministry press release has revealed.

Among the victims, five were drowned, two were killed when struck by falling boulders and two were buried under landslides while one person was killed in a building collapse.

In Guizhou Province, the torrential rain left four people dead and four others missing, while more than 10,000 residents have been forced to relocated.

Approximately 6,700 are in need of basic necessities, according to statistics from the provincial civil affairs department.

The estimated cost of the damage is about 300 million yuan (48.3 million U.S. dollars), and has affected nearly 370,000 people.

The torrential rains are forecast to continue in the province until Friday.
