2020 Budget: Senate Queries Allocation Of N600 Million For Privatised Power Companies

Must read

The Senate Committee on Power has on Tuesday, October 22, 2019, queried Ministry of Power over the allocation of N600 million to Power Distribution Companies in the 2020 Budget proposal.

But Louis Edozien, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Power, explained that the  inclusion of N600 million in the 2020 budget for Disco is part of the contract agreement.

However, Gabriel Suswan, the chairman of the committee, wondered how a privatised company could still be allocated that sum of money.

Suswam said members of the Committee are not comfortable with the provision.

He said: “It is wrong to take power money and spend it on Disco.

“The money you are spending to upgrade the Disco ought not to come from the Ministry because Discos have been privatised.”

The former Governor of Benue State, who made this known during the budget defence of the Ministry of Power, said President Muhammadu Buhari is committed to achieve stable power supply for the country.

He however accused some of President Buhari’s lieutenants of pursing selfish agenda to ensure that stable power supply is not achieved.

Senators vowed that the Committee will not tolerate the agenda of selfish lieutenants bent to frustrate stable electricity in the country.

Also, another member of the Committee, Yusuf Yusuf, expressed dissatisfaction with the provision of N600 million to Discos in the 2020 Budget.

Speaking on Mambila power station, the Taraba State born politician said there is nothing visible on ground there.
