NEW YORK, USA – Nigerian Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti narrowly escaped harm in the United States after a stray bullet shattered the window of his hotel room during a recent trip.
Kuti, the youngest son of the late Fela Anikulapo Kuti, posted a video on Instagram showing a bullet hole in the window, visibly shaken by the incident.
The video captured the aftermath of the projectile piercing the glass, with Kuti expressing disbelief and concern over what transpired.
“Tell me you are in America without telling me you are in America,” he said in the post. “I am in my hotel room just chilling and boom — this happened.”
In a tone laced with irony and frustration, he added: “I read somewhere that these are the civilized people,” suggesting a critique of gun violence in the United States, a recurring theme in the country’s social and political discourse.
The Grammy-nominated musician did not disclose the city or hotel where the incident took place, but the video quickly went viral, sparking concern from fans and fellow artists.
There have been no official reports of injuries, and Kuti confirmed he was unharmed.
Gun violence remains a persistent issue in many parts of the U.S., with stray bullet incidents affecting both residents and visitors alike.
According to Gun Violence Archive data, over 44,000 people died from gun-related injuries in the U.S. in 2024 alone, including accidental shootings and stray bullet casualties.
Seun Kuti, known for his outspoken views and politically charged music, has not indicated whether he will file a report or take further steps in response to the incident.
