Nigerian Army Warns Public Over Fake Social Media Accounts Impersonating Senior Officers

Must read

ABUJA, Nigeria — The Nigerian Army has cautioned members of the public against fraudulent Facebook accounts impersonating senior military officers, warning that the accounts were created to deceive and defraud unsuspecting individuals.

In a statement released on Sunday, May 24, 2026, through its official X handle, the army said fraudsters had established fake accounts using the identity of the Deputy Chief of Standards and Evaluation, Major General Raymond Utsaha, and the photograph of the Chief of Policy and Plans, Major General Bamidele Alabi.

“The Nigerian Army wishes to categorically state that the said Facebook accounts are fake and were created with malicious intent to defraud individuals through false representations and unauthorised online engagements,” the statement read.

The army urged the public to disregard any communications, friend requests, financial solicitations or other engagements originating from the accounts.

It further clarified that senior military officers do not use personal social media platforms or unofficial online channels to conduct official transactions, award contracts, solicit financial assistance or handle sensitive matters of state.

“The general public is urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious accounts or activities to the appropriate security agencies,” the statement added.

The army said it would continue to monitor the situation and pursue necessary measures against individuals or groups found to be engaged in cyber impersonation or related fraudulent activities.
