LAGOS, Nigeria — Prominent Lagos businessman, philanthropist, and Brazilian-heritage community leader, Asiwaju Bolaji Charles Mendes, celebrated his 75th birthday by sharing the occasion with children with disabilities and their caregivers.

The celebration, held on Sunday, October 25, 2026, brought together nearly 400 children and caregivers from approximately 35 care homes across Lagos State.

For Mendes, whose commitment to charitable causes spans more than two decades, the gathering was an opportunity to celebrate a personal milestone while bringing happiness to children requiring special care and support.

The event also reflected the values of generosity, community service, and cultural pride that have characterised his public life.

A Birthday Celebration Dedicated to Giving

The gathering was made possible through contributions from individuals and corporate organisations that donated food, drinks, gifts, and other supplies for the children.

According to a message circulated among supporters after the celebration, many of the participating children rarely have opportunities to attend recreational gatherings outside their care homes.

“For most of them this is the only outing in a year,” the message stated.

Beyond the celebrations, representatives of the participating homes met directly with donors, giving them an opportunity to explain their needs and establish relationships that could lead to further assistance.

Supporters were encouraged to maintain contact with the institutions and continue contributing to the welfare of their residents.

Mendes, himself a donor for more than 20 years, chose to mark his birthday in the company of the children, adding a personal dimension to the charitable gathering.

The occasion brought together the spirit of celebration and the practical importance of giving back to society.

A Proud Custodian of Lagos’s Brazilian Heritage

Mendes is also widely associated with efforts to preserve the cultural identity of Lagos’s historic Afro-Brazilian community.

A Nigerian of Brazilian ancestry, he holds the traditional title of Asiwaju of Popo Aguda, the historic Brazilian Quarters on Lagos Island.

He has played a leadership role in the Brazilian Descendants’ Arts and Cultural Association (BDACA), an organisation dedicated to preserving the traditions, history, and cultural expressions of Brazilian descendants in Nigeria.

His involvement includes serving as Coordinator-in-Chief in the development of the Popo Aguda Easter Arts and Music Extravaganza, an initiative established in 2019.

According to a News Agency of Nigeria report, the programme was introduced under his leadership to encourage cultural preservation, community interaction, and tourism.

The initiative has brought together music, dance, traditional cuisine, and cultural performances celebrating the historical relationship between Lagos and Brazil.

In 2020, Mendes also served as convener of the planned Easter cultural festival themed “Strengthening Our Roots”, organised by Brazilian descendants in collaboration with the Brazilian Consulate General in Lagos.

As reported by The Guardian, the programme was developed following the success of the inaugural festival in Popo Aguda.

His involvement in these initiatives reflects a commitment to ensuring that the distinctive traditions of Lagos’s Brazilian-descendant community remain visible to younger generations.

Celebrating a Life of Service and Leadership

Beyond his cultural and philanthropic activities, Mendes is a businessman and prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State.

He is also recognised by the traditional designation Ashipa Eyo Oba Alakete Pupa LABA, reflecting his association with the cultural institutions and traditions of Lagos.

His contributions to charitable initiatives, community development, and cultural preservation have made these activities important features of his public life.

As he marks his 75th birthday, the decision to celebrate among children with disabilities offers a fitting reflection of his longstanding dedication to philanthropy.

The nearly 400 children and caregivers who participated in the gathering were at the heart of a celebration that placed generosity and human connection above personal ceremony.

For a man whose interests embrace business, philanthropy, community leadership, and the preservation of Afro-Brazilian heritage, the occasion represented another meaningful milestone.

Happy 75th birthday to Asiwaju Bolaji Charles Mendes, a distinguished son of Popo Aguda, passionate philanthropist, and proud ambassador of Lagos’s Brazilian heritage. May the years ahead bring continued good health, happiness, fulfilment, and many more opportunities to serve humanity.
