Gbajabiamila Declares Seat Of Late Nigeria Lawmaker, Ja’afaru Illiyasu, Vacant

Femi Gbajabiamila, the speaker of the House of Representatives, has on Tuesday, December 17, 2019, declared vacant the Magama/Rijau federal constituency in Niger state.

The member representing the constituency, Ja’afaru Illiyasu died on the 2nd of December, 2019 and announced on the floor December 3, 2019, during a sitting of the House.

The Speaker’s letter declaring the seat vacant was read on the floor of the House during Tuesday’s plenary by the deputy speaker, Ahmed Idris Wase.

The speaker said the declaration of the seat vacant is in line with the constitution and to allow the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct a bye election in the area within the constitutionally stipulated period.

Ja’afaru Illiyasu, a first term lawmaker who represents Magama/Rijau federal constituency of Niger State passed away on Monday, December 2, 2019.

The lawmaker died in his sleep according to sources close to him.

“He came back from Lagos last night, went to sleep but did not wake up,” he said.
