‘Going to Chibok does not solve anything’ – President Jonathan

Must read

President Goodluck Jonathan has been criticised for not visiting Chibok, the village in Borno state where more than 200 girls were abducted by Islamist terror group, Boko Haram on April 14, 2014.

There were media reports on Thursday, May 15, 2014 indicating that the President was scheduled to visit the village which has received worldwide attention in the past month on Friday, and another report on Friday which announced that President Jonathan had cancelled the visit to travel to Paris.

President Jonathan’s special adviser on media and publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati had dismissed those media reports saying there was never a planned Presidential visit to Chibok.

President Jonathan has said that visiting Chibok is not relevant to rescueing the abducted students of Government Secondary School, Chibok.

He said on Saturday, may 17, 2014 in Paris, where he is meeting with other African leaders, that since the abducted girls were not being held in the school, the major challenge before him and his government now is to locate and rescue them.

President Jonathan said in a press conference while in France that he was not averse to visiting scenes of terror attacks as he had done so in the past.

He said: “These girls are not held in Chibok. People want the President to go to Chibok. If the President goes to Chibok today, it does not solve any problem. The problem facing the President and indeed the Nigerian government is how to get these girls from wherever they are.”

President Jonathan is in Paris to participate in a summit convened by President Francois Hollande to discuss fresh strategies for dealing with the security threat posed by Boko Haram and other terrorist groups in West and Central Africa.
