ABEOKUTA, Nigeria — The Ogun State government has appointed 1,200 political assistants across its 236 wards in a bid to strengthen grassroots participation in governance and foster closer ties between communities and the state administration.

In a statement on Friday, September 12, 2025, Kayode Akinmade, special adviser on media and strategy to Governor Dapo Abiodun, said the initiative would serve as a platform for enhanced civic engagement and accountability.

The assistants, drawn at five per ward, will function as “change agents” tasked with improving communication between residents and government.

They are expected to identify and articulate the needs of their communities while ensuring that feedback from the government is relayed effectively at the local level.

“The newly appointed political assistants are to support the delivery of democratic dividends, articulate the needs of their respective wards, and communicate these needs to the state government,” Akinmade said.

“They are also expected to provide accurate feedback from the government to the wards and vice versa.”

He added that the appointments fulfil one of Governor Abiodun’s electoral promises to involve every ward in shaping the administration’s development agenda.

“The governor is committed to running an inclusive government that values the people’s input in shaping policies and initiatives,” he noted.

The state government also urged the new appointees to see their roles as opportunities to contribute meaningfully to the growth of their wards, local government areas, and Ogun State as a whole.
