Handover Tensions: Radio Station Seized, Police Attacked by Suspected Oodua Nation Agitators

LAGOS, Nigeria — The nation’s South-West region woke to a state of alarm on Sunday, May 28, 2023, as suspected Oodua Nation agitators launched coordinated attacks in Lagos and Ibadan, including an assault on a police station and the hijacking of a radio station.

The upheaval comes less than a day before the scheduled transfer of power from outgoing President Muhammadu Buhari to President-elect Bola Tinubu.

Two agitators are now in custody following an attack on the Alausa Police Station in Ikeja, located directly opposite the Lagos State Government Secretariat. The motive behind the assault remains unclear as of this report.

Meanwhile, in a daring move at the break of dawn, another group of suspected agitators took over Amuludun 99.1 FM, a station owned by the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), in Ibadan, the capital of the neighboring Oyo State.

Armed with an assortment of charms, they stormed the station at around 6:00 a.m., declaring the birth of a new Oodua Nation, separate from the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“Oodua Nation has come to stay,” the invaders broadcasted live, along with other statements like “Yoruba no more under Federal Republic of Nigeria”, and “United Nation will soon declare Oodua Nation.”

Stephen Agbaje, General Manager of the station, confirmed the incident.

“Some group of agitators came around in the night, and took over the station, but the situation has been brought under control by the security agents.

They were able to recover the station, and some arrests have been made,” he stated.

Reports indicate that five of the radio station invaders were arrested. As the nation holds its breath for tomorrow’s presidential handover, these incidents underscore the simmering tensions and separatist sentiments within the country.
