SANTA CLARITA, CA – Actress Taraji P. Henson, best known for her role in the television series Empire, showcased her appreciation for her housekeeper of three years by giving her a stunning backyard makeover.
Henson collaborated with Drew and Jonathan Scott on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, also known as the Property Brothers, on HGTV’s Celebrity IOU to create a garden sanctuary for her housekeeper Jahal and her daughter Winter.
Henson has formed a close bond with Jahal, who she describes as being like a second mother to her.
Jahal, who emigrated from El Salvador over 30 years ago, has been an unwavering support to Henson, particularly during the pandemic.
Henson, who admires Jahal’s resilience as a fellow single mother, wanted to give back to the woman who she feels “mothers” her.
“Her backyard represents a place where she gets to decompress because she takes care of people’s homes for a living,” Henson explained on the episode.
Jahal has a passion for gardening, and Henson wanted to create an outdoor space that allows Jahal to escape the indoors and indulge in her love for gardening.
Working tirelessly for four weeks, Henson, together with the Scott brothers, converted Jahal’s backyard into an idyllic extension of her home.
They created several areas for relaxation and entertainment, including an outdoor dining area, a living room equipped with a fireplace and pergola, and a zen garden with a calming water feature.
Additionally, a potting station was installed to facilitate Jahal’s gardening without the strain of bending over.
The design choices made were mindful of Jahal’s preferences and needs. Knowing that Jahal has a penchant for modern aesthetics, the once-blue house was painted white.
Concrete pavers and decomposed granite were employed for their low-maintenance properties. A fence lined with plants was also added to create an attractive backdrop.
One poignant element of the makeover was a bench with a name plaque to memorialize the family’s departed loved ones, adding a touch of sentiment to the garden sanctuary.
Reflecting on the project, Henson shared the philosophy imparted by her father: “My father would always say, ‘If you are a blessing, it is your job to be a blessing’.”
So that’s how I live my life.” With this backyard makeover, Henson has undoubtedly brought joy and serenity to Jahal, who has given so much through her care and support.
