A destitute popularly called Sister Esther delivered a baby boy around 7am on Thursday January 16th 2014 on the road in Ketu, Lagos, Linda Ikeji reports.
Esther gave birth with the help of five women on the road in front of No. 7, Adisa Akintoye Street, Ketu.
Neigbours came to their aid with baby clothes, diapers, water, sponge, thread, and other materials needed to deliver a baby. The woman gave their wrappers to be used as a shield.
According to reports, as they arrived the palace the king did not attend to them.
The people then took the baby to Tipper Garage (bus stop) where sister Esther usually sleeps, in front (outside) of Sweet Sensation at Tipper Garage.
New reports say Esther was later taken to a clinic named Oba’s Prolific Clinic and Maternity Home, which is on the same street she delivered yesterday.
Esther and the baby are well taken care of at the clinic. A register has been opened for her and the new born where all donations are recorded. A lot of people have visited her in the clinic.
According to reports, the Oba of Ketu visited her yesterday at the clinic. He notified a social welfare agency of Esther’s case and also blessed her.
People in the neighbourhood say Esther was mentally unstable, and touts took advantage of her situation and raped her. She seems normal now and can communicate properly. She was able to identify that she’s an indigene of Ondo state.
A rep of the clinic said about three different agencies from the Lagos State government, one of which is Office of Youth and Sports Developments, Alausa, had visited her in the hospital. Some agencies are working to take Sister Esther and her baby back home to her family in Ondo state.
