Pandemonium As Massive Explosion Hits Enugu

A considerable degree of pandemonium has broken out in the late hours of Monday, March 16, 2015 in Amokwe, Udi Local Government Area of Enugu state following a massive explosion which left several residents with varying degrees of injuries.

The loudness of the explosion left the occupants of the building scampering for safety as they all fled their homes in a bid to escape a suspected bomb attack.

Although nobody was reported dead in the incident, the injured few were rushed to the hospital for quick medical care.

As at Tuesday, March 17, 2015 the explosion formed a major part of discussion amongst residents of the metropolis.

The Enugu State Police Command has said the incident was caused by an accidental explosion of ‘high calibre fireworks’, which were stored in a container in the compound.

It was learnt that a trailer laden with fireworks was brought into the building by someone whose identity was not disclosed earlier on Sunday, March 15 2015.

The police public relations officer of the state, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, revealed results of an “instant analysis” of the explosion via a statement.

He stated that men of the Explosive Ordinance Department and other operatives have cordoned off the scene of the explosion.

Investigation to decipher the actual cause of the explosion is currently ongoing

Amaraizu said, “The Enugu State command of the Nigeria Police Force through its operatives have commenced a full scale investigations into an incident of explosion at Amokwe Udi in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu state on Monday with a view to finding out the possible cause of the explosion.

“It was, however, gathered that some of the injured have been taken to the hospitals just as men of the Explosive Ordinance Department of the Enugu State Command have cordoned off the place with other operatives.

“Meanwhile, instant analysis of the incident by the operatives of the EODepartment on ground at the scene of the explosion revealed that it was occasioned by high calibre pyrotechnics (fireworks) in a large quantity packed in the house of the owner that exploded.”
