ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced the second phase of its contactless biometric passport application system, extending the service to four additional countries: the United States, Mexico, Jamaica, and Brazil.
This expansion follows the initial launch of the system late last year, which was designed to streamline the passport renewal process for Nigerians abroad.
According to a statement issued on Sunday, April 13, 2025, by NIS Public Relations Officer, AS Akinlabi, the contactless application system was introduced in the United States on Friday, April 11, 2025, with the service also rolling out in Mexico, Jamaica, and Brazil on Monday, April 14, 2025.
This follows the successful implementation of the system in several other countries, including Canada, European nations, and Asian countries, making it easier for Nigerians to renew their passports without having to visit a passport center for biometric data capturing.
Akinlabi highlighted that the system allows applicants to renew their passports remotely by downloading the NIS mobile application from the Google Play Store, with an Apple Store version set to be launched soon.
The NIS is also working on an enhanced version of the app for both Android and iOS users, aimed at improving the overall user experience and accessibility.
Looking ahead, the NIS confirmed that the third phase of the system’s rollout will include Nigeria and Australia, with specific dates for these countries to be announced in due course.
The NIS remains committed to delivering efficient, innovative services to Nigerians around the world, ensuring that the passport application process is as convenient as possible.
